Justin Trudeau Canadian Prime Minister Announces Resignation
Reports indicate that Trudeau is likely to announce his resignation, although a final decision has yet to be made. He is expected to make this announcement before the caucus meeting on Wednesday, according to a newspaper report. The ruling Liberals are significantly trailing in the polls, and an election must be held by late October.
OTTAWA, Jan 5 (Reuters) – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly leaning towards announcing his intention to step down, although he has yet to make a final decision, according to a source familiar with his thoughts.
This information was shared with Reuters following a report by the Globe and Mail, which indicated that Trudeau might announce his resignation as leader of Canada’s ruling Liberal Party as soon as Monday, after serving nine years in office.
The source wished to remain anonymous as they were not permitted to speak publicly.
Trudeau’s exit would leave the party without a permanent leader at a time when polls indicate the Liberals are likely to suffer a significant defeat against the official opposition Conservatives in an election that must occur by late October.
Sources informed the Globe and Mail that while they were unsure of the exact timing, they anticipate Trudeau will reveal his plans to step down before an emergency meeting of Liberal legislators scheduled for Wednesday.
A growing number of Liberal MPs, concerned by a string of disappointing polls, have openly called for Trudeau to step down.
The prime minister’s office did not respond right away to a request for comment after hours. According to his published schedule for Monday, Trudeau is set to join a cabinet committee meeting on Canada-U.S. relations virtually.
It is still uncertain if Trudeau will resign right away or continue as prime minister until a new Liberal leader is chosen, the Globe and Mail reported.
CALLS TO RESIGN GROW
Trudeau became the Liberal leader in 2013 when the party was struggling and had fallen to third place in the House of Commons for the first time.
If he decides to resign, it could lead to renewed calls for a swift election to establish a stable government capable of managing the administration of President-elect Donald Trump over the next four years.
According to one source, the prime minister has talked with Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc about whether he would consider stepping in as interim leader and prime minister, but this would be impractical if LeBlanc intends to run for the leadership.
Trudeau, 53, has managed to keep Liberal lawmakers at bay who are anxious about the polls and the potential loss of secure seats in two special elections.
However, the pressure for him to step down has intensified since December, when he attempted to demote Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, a key ally in his cabinet, after she resisted his calls for increased spending.
Instead of accepting the demotion, Freeland resigned and wrote a letter accusing Trudeau of resorting to “political gimmicks” instead of prioritizing the country’s best interests.
Trudeau brought the Liberals to power in 2015 with a promise of “sunny ways” and a progressive agenda that championed women’s rights and committed to combating climate change.
Yet, the challenges of governance gradually took their toll on him, and like many leaders in the West, he found himself consumed by the need to address the pandemic’s fallout.
Despite Ottawa’s significant spending to support consumers and businesses, resulting in record budget deficits, public frustration grew as prices continued to rise.
A poorly managed immigration policy resulted in a surge of arrivals, further straining an already overheated housing market.
